The Burnet High School girls soccer team beat Marble Falls 2-0 March 10 to complete the journey the Lady Dawgs started months earlier: win the District 25-4A crown without losing a single match.

The Lady Dawgs (22-2-1) earned all the goals they needed in the first half by freshman Brook Oliva with assists from Kaycie Banton and Amelia Griffin.

Burnet had more shots on goal than the Lady Mustangs.

“We hit the posts a lot,” Burnet head coach Kimberly Myhre said with a chuckle. “It’s pretty surreal. We are undefeated district champs — that’s huge. You have to show up and play every game. They all stormed the field, and we had a ton of fans. We had a lot of green cheering us on in the stands.”

The Lady Dawgs will face Comal Canyon Lake in a bi-district championship Friday, March 24, at Tiger Stadium in Dripping Springs with time to be determined. It’s a rematch of a 3-1 Burnet win Jan. 10.

“They led 1-0 at the half, and we came back and won it,” Myhre said. “We’ll have to show up and play our game for sure.”

The coach noted it’s not easy to win a district championship and especially as the favorite because every opponent’s intensity is higher with the aim of ruining that pursuit. Marble Falls wasn’t any different, she added.

“It was a high-intensity game,” she said.

The Lady Dawgs understood that and picked up their level of play to match the opponent’s.

“They put a lot in this season,” Myhre said. “They left 100 percent on the field from start to finish.”

Though the playoffs won’t for two weeks, the Lady Dawgs will host Salado (22-3, District 5-4A runner-up) at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 20, at Bulldog Field in a warm-up match.

“(Salado’s) district was tough,” Myhre said. “Our bi-district is tough. We knew going into district and to compete, we needed to get first.”

To the Lady Dawgs, winning the district crown checks off one goal of many. The returners are still driven by the 1-0 loss to Bay City at the Class 4A Region III tournament where the opponent won because of Burnet error,

“Ever since that game, we have to get back to that,” Myhre said. “(After that match, it was) way harder to go to sleep. I think (my players) are still hungry. They got a taste (of playoff success) a little bit. Now they want more. They have a target on their backs.”

The Lady Dawgs will enjoy a few days of Spring Break before returning to practice Thursday, March 16.
